We asked Ladina Schopf - an interior designer, architect, and founder of LS Projects - for her suggestions on how to pick the best one. They weighed the capacity of storage, layout and energy efficiency as well as other features.

Inside the fridge, there are 17 shelves and compartments. The refrigerator compartment has 18.5 cubic feet of space, which is roughly on the same as the size of a French door fridge costing this much. It has a decent sized freezer in the left side. But it's not the biggest one I've seen.

You can adjust the shelves in both compartments to create a customized storage layout for whatever you have to keep. The interior design of the GE PYE22PYNFS is good-looking, too. The LED lighting is an attractive feature. The in-door storage bins have a third shelf which can be folded down to store large items. The drawers come with temperature controls that allow you to set them to Meat, Beverage or Deli settings. They're easy to open and close, however I found their plastic textured coatings to be a little difficult on the fingers.

The GE PGE29BYTFS Smart Refrigerator has all the features you'd expect from a refrigerator in this price range. It has Wi-Fi as well as app support and GE's SmartHQ Software. The app, which is available for iOS and Android devices allows you to control your fridge from anywhere in the world, and offers a ton of customization options. It also sends you notifications when the door is unlocked and when the freezer or fridge must be defrosted and when the filter has to be changed.

It is nice it GE PYE22PYNFS could offer Precise Fill the option that is found in a few GE refrigerators that allow users to choose the number of cups they would like to dispense. It also has an indicator on the display of the fridge to display how much water you have remaining, but that's not as effective as Precise Fill.

The Ice maker is among the best we've ever tested, and it produces a pyramid-shaped form of Ice with low water usage. This refrigerator is ideal for a small household or a kitchenette with an attractive design and top of the best food preservation.

This refrigerator was the highest-rated refrigerator in our Refrigerators Test for various reasons. The freezer temperature remained steady at just above 0° Fahrenheit and never changed by more than a fraction, this is essential to avoid freezing burn. The fridge section of the fridge also performed well. It reached the initial temperature set within an hour, and remained at that temperature throughout our testing.

Bosch is known for its premium appliances, so it's no surprise that this counter depth refrigerator is also a smart appliance with the option of connecting to your home Wi-Fi and Bosch's Home Connect platform. The fridge has an ordinary french door fridge only door layout, with two rows of shelving with spill-capture and a set of crisper drawers. The top shelf to the right can be folded to provide more space for taller items. There's also a full-width drawer for food items and an internal water dispenser.

One of the nice features of this refrigerator is that the Ice maker is located in the freezer, making it easy to transfer the ice to the refrigerator to be used when it is needed. The freezer also has clever design features, such as sliding drawers that can help you organize your belongings. It also has a large container to store frozen food items, and a separate container for ice.

Smart InstaView panel is another awesome feature of the refrigerator. You can manage the temperature, lighting, and other aspects of your refrigerator from your smartphone. It's a nice way to control and monitor your refrigerator, particularly if you're away from home.

Although the Smart InstaView is a neat feature, it doesn't enhance the overall performance of the refrigerator. In fact it took a bit longer to defrost and chill foods in this refrigerator than some of the others we tested. This is probably due to its larger capacity.

The other issue we have with this refrigerator is its doors. The sunken handles let shorter people open them from the bottom. However, taller people still struggle to close them without slamming them. It would have been much better to have front-mounted handles.

The LG Counter-Depth MAX is a excellent choice for those who want to combine the advantages of a French-door refrigerator's aesthetics with a more efficient layout. It has a capacity that is superior to counter-depth models and also cools evenly. It's also a bit less than the top counter-depth refrigerator that has an ice maker, which helps make it a popular choice.

Frigidaire Counter Depth French Door Refrigerator

This Frigidaire French door refrigerator is a good choice when you're looking for a french door fridge with non plumbed ice & water dispenser door fridge that won't break the budget. It's a simple fridge that might not be as eye-catching like some of its competitors however, it does have enough features to make it a suitable choice. Its most significant feature, the temperature adjustable drawer, helps to keep food items such as vegetables and meat fresher longer. It also has a large ice maker as well as a water dispenser.

Another feature that is worth mentioning is the "Chill Drawer" that sits above the two crisper bins. This drawer allows you to use the majority of the refrigerator's cooling power to this area, so it can be used to store food items that require special attention. This feature can be adjusted by using an outside slider that is located inside the drawer. You can also adjust the general cooling settings for the entire fridge. I've found that the general settings are more effective than the specific ones.
